Atlantic City's Borgata delays reopening amid new restrictions on casinos in New Jersey

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey -- Gov. Phil Murphy on Monday postponed the resumption of indoor dining and banned drinking and smoking at Atlantic City's casinos as they reopen this week, causing one casino, the Borgata, to scrap plans to reopen anytime soon.

Murphy said he acted because of a lack of compliance over the use of face masks and social distancing as the coronavirus outbreak continues to rage in many parts of the country.

Late Monday night, the Democratic governor also revealed he is banning smoking at reopened casinos, which could be a deal-breaker for some gambling halls.

Atlantic City last tried a smoking ban in 2008 but scrapped it after just 20 days of plunging casino revenue and disgruntled smokers.

Well, we have/had reservations July 20 for 3 nights. Obviously this is up in the air. No booze and no LL for the Penguins???? Shit, why go?

Murphy really stuck it to AC with this. Casinos across the country are open and managing quite well. I thought Borgata had a good plan and processes in place and I think it’s ridiculous that Murphy thinks that at 25% capacity these businesses are incapable of controlling what he fears is a crowd spread.

Not doing so well in Arizona. Governor Ducey closed bars, gyms, movie theaters, and water parks for at least a month. 3 casinos already closed for at least 2 weeks already. This is the second week.

IMO, Casinos with mandated face mask rulings and policies are managing well, definitely not all casinos. I completely agree that Murphy’s “indefinite” ruling against inside dining and drinks is over the top, especially if other precautions are in place, it doesn’t make sense. With all the other restrictions, doing this is just a threat to make sure they don’t open (I’m not familiar enough with NJ government but they seem to be a bit anti-casino at the moment).

    N.J. reopening Atlantic City casinos.

I don’t think NJ is against the casinos, they make the State a lot of money. I think our governor is too afraid he may end up looking bad if positive cases continue to rise. He’s blaming people going to beach towns but no one is saying all of the protesting going on contributed to any of this? We have been on lockdown since 3/18, I pretty much follow all of the pandemic protocol due to one of my children being a severe asthmatic. 2 full months into this I couldn’t keep him on house arrest anymore.

I don’t know when our State will return to normal, I feel like it may never be normal again. Not sure if anyone else feels this way?

I hope the AC casinos will survive this and I hope I get to go on my scheduled trip to Vegas in October! Hoping I may experience normalcy for a few days.

If I wanted a time out, I would go back to kindergarten.

SUFAC was trying to get me to come down with him to the Golden Nugget tomorrow. I'm like dude I can't even get a drink OR eat on the property unless it's outside. I'll stay in PA and gamble where it's currently allowed! (For now, cases are spiking again!)

There are several video interviews in here and I noticed in the clip from Golden Nugget that, not only are they not serving beverages, they are saying that customers cannot "consume" any beverages on the slot floor. So much for bringing your own mug of "coffee" down from your room. Not solely due to that, but I did cancel my Harrah's reservation for next weekend. Absolutely not worth the drive.
