Casinos’ Stingier Slot Payouts Hurting Sales, Machine Makers Say

Shocker not for those of us who gamble. Seriously they are just now getting around to thinking their low percentage return on some slots may be discouraging slot players from playing as much as in the past?

Interesting article and it sounded like the slot manufacturers are upset with the casinos for removing and or setting paybacks too tight.

Seems to me the manufacturers could influence the paybacks by raising the minimum payback percentage on their machines.

Not sure I'm using the correct terms but if casinos can adjust machines to pay back less and less to players than slot makers theoretically could configure their machines to a minimum allowable payback that limits the casino from undercutting the player.

However 2 years ago I was chatting with a WMS employee who I ran into at Cosmopolitan one evening and he confided that a certain large casino group who is currently trying to restructure and is in deep trouble with their creditors told WMS and I assume other slot manufacturer's too that if they didn't set the paybacks at the lower end of the legal limits they would not buy or lease their slot machines. This group has so many casinos that WMS gave in to them and I'm sure other slot manufacturing companies had to do the same. :(

Interesting comments from that WMS rep. I too would be interested to hear that conversation. At some point the casinos will have to compete and I'm sure having interesting and fair games will attract more patrons. Least hoping so.

9.4%? That's a bargain compared to the OK casinos where percentages are so tight they don't post any information on their paybacks.

Actually I was expecting more like 87 percent but perhaps the general average is more due to the higher payback percentages on $1 and above slots.

This, combined with the IRS considering increasing revenue thru proposals to tax more slot wins ($600 or higher), spells death to the manufacturers. At what point do the manufacturers start investing in casino properties to enhance publicity thru higher payouts and therefore create healthy competition to drive up payback percentage?
