View Full Version : GVR vs. Red Rock vs M

I'm starting to plan my October vacation. Will be in Vegas from the evening of 10/14 through 10/20.
Am thinking of spending that Wednesday night off-strip before I pick up my friend at LAS on Thursday morning and we go to MGM for three nights.
Would like to use a mvyVegas reward for GVR or Red Rock. I think I prefer Red Rock. The Red Rock reward is currently sold out and for whatever reason, 10/14 is listed at $650 on the website (with adjacent nights being $200) so I may not even be able to book it if I get the reward.
Has anyone stayed at GVR and would recommend it? Over RR if I can book that? Also, the M isn't much farther out so that could be an option.
Basically, this is a long-winded way of asking for thoughts on these three off-strips properties (or others) -- thanks in advance!

Red Rock is the nicest of the properties and depending on what you want to do would be my choice.
With your play you should be able to get a back end comp for any hotel so using the Myvegas reward for hotel should be kept for food or show redemption.

I've visited all of them but only stayed at The M. I really enjoyed staying there, but felt that one night was enough based on location. The whole place has a nice laid back vibe (my slot pal says it's like a Slot Spa), the rooms are really nice, service is good and the dining options worked for me. I think their buffet is a close third after Wicked Spoon & Bacchanal. Since then they have become a Penn National property, so I don't get any comps there anymore :ohwell:
The first few times I played at Red Rock I quite liked it, but they seem to have changed lately. The music now is loud and jarring (but I am old) and the last time I went was with Mauretania (she was a Red Rock regular) and neither of us liked the overall feeling. In over an hour on the floor I was never approached by a cocktail waitress. The property is beautiful though.
I've only been to GVR once, and I didn't come away with much of an impression. I think it may be a better place to stay than to just drop in on based on various things I have read. I will be there taking advantage of a MyVegas buffet next week, so I will see if I get any more of an impression.
Not sure if this is of any help at all, but there you have it :)

I can't help with your question Dina but have a great time in Vegas! Love your TRs.

I have been to all three many times, but only stayed at Red Rock.
I like all of them- my last visit to Red Rock I was there for three days and won on all three and left there quite a bit ahead. The place is so big that you can stay and play there without feeling sick of the place, like you would in a smaller casino. I have always done well at GVR too, but it seems like the Station Casinos became harder to get offers from in the past few years, even though my play had gone up on my last visits.
I had really liked the M before too- I always did well there and its a newer, nice property. Their casino is a lot smaller though- more of place that I feel one day would be enough there. their buffet is the best though in my opinion of all in Vegas. I used to feel like I got a lot of play in at the M before, always seemed to win there, but the last time I went, and since the ownership change, seems like it has been tightened up a lot- and others have said the same.
Keep in mind though, if you decide to just go and stay- and then get your rooms comped at the end, make sure you just book regularly directly with the property. A few years ago I had booked at Red Rock through a special offer, and then talked to a host at the end of my stay- they said I played enough to be comped, but then realized I had booked with a special offer and then said they couldn't refund me- were only able to comp off my food charges. It was a big ordeal that even management couldn't help me with- they just offered me the amount in freeplay on my next visit for my troubles.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Sounds like there are plusses and minuses to all three.
Big Mac and kdk, turns out Red Rock is $650 and GVR is $250 for a Wednesday night. Most strip properties are less than GVR. And I'll be there for approximately 15 hours (including sleep) so I may not gamble enough for a back end comp. Also thanks Nhcris for your opinion :)
I'll probably continue to monitor for a bit. I do want to try something different and go off-strip, and I'm not playing for future offers since I'm partial to the strip, but if I can get MGM for $125 and GVR for $250, it may not be worth the hassle of staying at one night for double the price, especially if I'm not sure if I can get it comped at the end. M is the cheapest and comparable to MGM so maybe I'll try it.
tee2green, thanks so much, Ida -- hope that this one will live up to the prior ones!

Dina, I'm looking forward to read about your experiences at each of them if you go. I have yet to check out Red Rock or GVR, and like kdk and others have said M resort these days despite the phone calls and mail offers just doesn't tempt me as I didn't like the changes made once Penn National Gaming took over the operation.

As far as slots based on my preference:
GVR
Red Rock
M.
I loved the selection of older Aristo at GVR. I also echo M after the sale to Penn Natl, hard to get wins there now IMO.
Another thought- if you go off strip, I still really like Eastside Cannery myself. I was just there two weeks ago. The property is still fairly new and the hotel rooms were nice. The casino isn't as "high end" as the strip or even the M, Red Rock, GVR, etc, but still nice. I like their selection of games, and I can really get a lot more wins and play time there than even the other off-strip casinos. I broke even there after 8 hours of play on my recent stay, and left over $1000 ahead after a 2 night stay back in December of last year where I played a lot. Plus since they aren't as high end they are easy to get comps from- I had no problem getting them to comp my hotel stay off before, and even with a couple hours of play I'm sure they would do something.

I also like playing at south point. It doesn't get mentioned much here.

Been to all three, but never stayed. Did the best on slots at GVR - crowd seemed older, but on property food options did not impress me. M was ok, but got sick from the buffet (not sure why I tried it, but all the hype about how good it is I guess got me, usually do not like buffets). RR is a nice property with decent casual food options and the Yard House is good - excellent offsite food options and of course there is Wonderboogie sometimes on the property.
Like someone stated earlier, the drink service is for the most part non-existent - unfortunately at all three IMO. But that turned out okay as I was driving.

Dina I'm no help except to say I stayed at RR ~4-5 years ago and loved the property. I have heard since then things had changed wrt comps but regarding the property it was beautiful.
Good luck and looking forward to hearing what you decide to do.

I like South Point too- good selection of games and its a big casino. I just haven't had much luck or stayed there yet. I would recommend it though to someone who wanted to try an off strip property, and not be too far away from the strip or airport.

As usual the only help I can offer is encouragement so I'm sure whatever you choose you will make it a fun time.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts! South point and east side cannery are on my radar now.
I really want to eat at Hearthstone, a new restaurant in RR. So one option I'm thinking of is to stay at Element in Summerlin and get my SPG points and drive over to RR (a few miles away) for dinner and slotting.
If GVR comes down in price I'll stay there. Or as mentioned may try south point.
Looks like it's going to be a packed trip. Straight No Chaser, Jimmy Buffett, Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, and MJOne! Before we head to AZ and Sedona and then my parents house.

Gambling at all 3 of those properties is terrible lately I have been to red rock twice in the last few months and blew through my bankroll very quickly I have been to GVR once and the same story. The M i also have only been once and did decent there still left a loser but money lasted longer.

If I wanted to try an off-strip place that's markedly different in terms of payback than the strip places, what would you recommend? Especially if I decide to stay at the Element place, I can be a complete free agent in terms of slotting that night :) And maybe would just pop into RR for Hearthstone for dinner.

Honestly I hate recommending places to people only because I dont want to be responsible if u lose hahaha. I can only give u my opinion. I have not played at any properties off of boulder highway so i cant speak for those. There is suncoast in the summerlin area thats a good place to play IMO. Rampart is hit and miss the orleans is not that great IMO. Norrhside cannery is good but im biased there because thats where my wife works😄. What I can recommend to you is to stay where it looks nice and u dont necessarily have to play there.

Not sure if you have Marriott status, but I really enjoyed the JW Marriott/Rampart Casino in Summerlin. Their video poker is excellent (don't think you play much of that?) and there is a good mix of new & old slots. The crowd is old and laid back which is fine with me. I came home significantly up from my 2 night stay there and I slept like a baby in their bed. The pool area was very pretty.

Nhcris, that's also in the Summerlin area, right? I don't have marriott status so I'd rather get spg points and stay at Element but maybe I'll play there and get dinner at RR first. Why am I making this so complicated?

Yep. It's about 10 minutes from Red Rock, and right next to Suncoast which I have never been to but might be worth a look see.
You plan like me - HHH!

Rampart is our favorite off-Strip property at the moment. Stayed there 4 times in the last 2 yrs.

I was going to throw in South Point too. I don't think this place gets enough love. I've played for hours there on their enormous slot floor and came away a winner the couple of times of been there. I've only stayed once and they screwed up my room so I got a 2 bedroom suite on the top floor as a "consolation". The room was awesome -- as nice as the nicest (non-Mansion) rooms at MGM and enormous. Really had a good time there and plan on going again -- and staying for more than one night next time I'm in Vegas. Plus, I think South Point has some of the better slot attendants I've ever run across.
I've stayed at GVR too. It was good but not spectatular -- my room was comp'd at the end of my stay. I thought their slot floor was pretty tired and full of older machines. Red Rock is a much nicer property, but I've also only played at RR and not stayed there.
