Cripple Creek, CO: Tips and info?

Mr. Boots and I are planning a brief Colorado getaway in early October. Hoping to catch the last of the aspen leaves (for me) and a few cool ghost towns (for him). Staying one night in Cripple Creek, which I understand has numerous small casinos. Anyone been through there? Any recommendations for or against specific properties? Do they have any slots there besides three-reel Red White and Blue and Buffalo? Thanks in advance for any insights! :)

I haven't been to Cripple Creek in a couple of years. We usually go to Black Hawk instead because it's closer. But, Cripple Creek is a cute lil town. And, the drive to it is beautiful! The casinos are all very small, but generally have a good variety of machines. Most of the casinos are on the main street in town and it is easy to casino hop. Our favorite casino, and the one we have had the most luck in, is Wildwood. We also like Bronco Billy's and the Brass Ass. If I remember correctly, the last state payout report showed that Cripple Creek had the highest payback % out of the 3 Colorado gambling towns. Cripple Creek is a quaint town. We have stayed at the Double Eagle in the past. Not fancy, pretty basic but it was clean. I think the last time we were there was 2 years ago. They had a mix of old and new games. You can walk from casino to casino easily. I think from end to end was less than a mile. Most of the casinos are pretty small.

Mr. Boots is very excited to be staying in the (supposedly haunted) Victorian hospital-turned-hotel on the hill in the middle of town. I am dreading it. Not worried about the ghosties, but I suspect the mattress will be completely caved in and I will wake up every time someone takes a step on those creaky old floorboards. I'll just have to wear earplugs and look forward to the swanky mountain lodge we're staying at a few nights later in Telluride. :)

Haven't been in any of the casinos in many years, but if you have time check out Canon City / Royal Gorge. Royal Gorge bridge is the highest bridge in the U.S. (if I recall correctly)

Thanks, Warren! I haven't been through that area since I was like 12, so the suggestions are much appreciated.

Having said that, it looks like we're going to postpone until possibly next spring. Just a little too much going on right now. But thanks again to all for the tips! :)
