View Full Version : Another Lesson Learned

I wanted to tell a little story. Feel free to read this and take from it what you will but this was my experience.
Now, I know everyone knows when it comes to comps at CET they all decide to use ALL of your reward credits first before taking or comping anything additional. It's not a great business practice by any means but its what they do. I just want to share my experience regarding this. I'd also like to point out had specific wording not been used, this wouldn't have been as big of a deal to me as it is.
So I took about two months to plan this Tahoe trip. Emails back and forth from me to the host. In one of those emails I had asked or brought up rather, seeing if they could honor an expired food voucher(As they had already agreed to honor a FP voucher). So I asked about a food voucher so that Brian and I could have a nice anniversary dinner. I was unfortunately told that they couldnt do that, which was fine. I was then told "don't worry. Just charge it to your room and I'll take care of it." Those exact words. On more than one occasion we had talked about this because she was not going to be on duty when I checked out or the night before I checked out. She said "i made note in the file that I'll cover it." I'm paraphrasing. So I have texts and emails. At no point ever did she reiterate the policy of taking RCs first. So I was operating under the assumption that she was saying she'd cover the dinner without the use of RCs. I was a fool to believe this.
I just want to put the statement out there to take what a host says with a grain of salt. NEVER believe they will cover a lunch, a dinner, any HARD comp without taking your reward credits first. I had about $178 I had been saving up for our upcoming dinner at GR Steak. All of that is gone. Had I know the "I'll cover it" was with the stipulation of "We will use your RCs and cover the rest". I may have rethought my going to dinner that night. I think that CET's business practices leave a massive sour taste in my mouth. It's no wonder some people are flocking to other properties where people say what they mean and mean what they say. I'm not saying by any means that I hate CET. I just think the way that some loyal players are handled its a little sad. Thanks for listening to my rant. If you have similar experiences please share them here. I know Georgiagambler has.
The only redeeming quality about now having to PAY for GR Steak, is that with my TR Credit Card I get 5x reward credits for every $1 spent.

I turned all my RCs into cash on my last night in Tahoe on both of my trips. I think I got 75 cents on the dollar but it still added up to a couple hundred cash both times.
Then when they comped my room charges the next morning they had nothing to use except REAL comps. Might have pissed them off but I don't care, I still have the same host and still get the same great FP offers each month. :)

Seems little underhanded that they cannot just tell customers up front that is their policy. Most everyone learns the hard way if the host isn't upfront about a hard policy.

The only way to do it is to to what goldengreeke did. Whether you are playing in Tahoe or Vegas. Otherwise they are going to take your rc's first. At least they honored your expired freeplay and gave you a suite.

That's the thing GG. If I had been told upfront "I can take your RCs and then comp the rest." Or something along those lines, instead of a blanket "I will cover it"(Where normal people assume that means that the host will take care of the WHOLE BILL) then I would have weighed my options. One of those being not eating there OR taking your suggestion and taking all my RCs into cash...but I wasn't given that choice. I was lead to believe that the host was going to in fact actually COMP the whole meal without using RCs.

I completely agree. All that needed to be said since I didnt ask for a hard comp on the dinner in the first place was. "While I cannot honor an expired food voucher, we can use your RCs for this dinner and then I can comp whatever those won't cover." Something along those lines. Don't use language that YOU KNOW FULL WELL is going to misrepresent the situation to the player. It's deceiving.

I knew that they took RCs up front. That's not the problem, the problem was that the host worded it very specifically that they were going to take care of the dinner. Making it sound like i didn't have to worry about the cost at all. There was no mention of the RCs like Hunter has said to me in the past regarding comps. This promise of "Taking care of my dinner" was a front end comp promise. It was an upfront. No mention of RCs. Had there been a mention up front about RCs first and then they would take care of the rest, it wouldn't have been such an infuriating issue for me.
Also, I didn't ask for the suite. I was fine with an Exec king. She upgraded after I had told her it was our anniversary. Then, in an email, made me feel bad about not warranting the play for the room...a room I didn't ask for in the first place.

Yep, I'm doing what GG does. Have Sun, Mon, and Tues comped in Hammond. No guarantee that it's a true comp room since they aren't on the TR website to reserve and I have no history there, but I plan on using the roughly $200 in RCs at Jack Binion's Sunday night before we ever check out so even if they wanted to take them, poof, they'll be gone! I do understand your frustration though. When dealing with CET, I think you just have to assume they will take the RCs first and if you want to be assured of anything else, get it in writing, specifically asking about the RCs.

That is a good plan. You'll have to tell me if they do in fact end up comping your room. You're right. While it should be assumed that CET would treat their loyal players with respect, I guess it was also my fault for believing or trusting a host saying "i'll cover it" and then not asking more detail about the RCs since I know thats what they usually do. I honestly, I guess just didn't think to ask because it was offered. It wasn't like I asked her to cover dinner at all. As my title states though, it's a lesson I learned the hard way. Unfortunately.
That's why I posted this post. I wanted people to know that what a host says should be taken with a grain of salt. Whether it's a vocal promise or a written promise. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and make sure you ask questions before you do anything.

With the situation cet is in now. They want to use as much RC to take it off their red column. It does suck for alot of unknowing guests. They don't want players banking a ton of RC anymore. Getting .75 per dollar RC is good. Do that while you can people. It might not last.

I had an experience like this too recently. I was out in San Diego about a month ago and stayed at Harrah's So Cal. I have a different host assigned to me there than my normal host who I deal with for CET and don't really know her but asked her about getting a room. I was getting offers still from playing there about a year and a half ago, but they were free rooms every night except Saturday. So I was given the usual "come see us before you check out and will review your play, always do that". I almost always play enough to warrant a free night so figured no problem. I had Friday night comped anyway, but not Saturday.
On my first night there, I had the usual host on duty come up to me when I started playing. I'm Diamond so this is typical of any CET property i go to. So I asked him about this too, thinking maybe he would be there when I check out so would be good to have talked with someone. Gave me the same story, we would be happy to review your play, please come see us.
But then I asked him if they use reward credits. He told me yes, that he has to use all of them first. I even said what if I play a lot and get like 25,000 tier points in one day, he said even then he would have to use my reward credits first. No exceptions to that. He also told me they assume when they offer things to players that they don't have much or any reward credits since most players use them all up. Then they can give "discretionary comps" out.
I'm one of those people too who like to keep a nice bank of them, I had $1900 worth before then. I keep them thinking I'll get something nice out of the catalog, or its nice to have them if I have a really bad gambling day and can't get more money, its like an emergency savings account at the casino. So I had to use $150 of them for my room, not a huge deal, but lesson learned. I could have used that as freeplay if I didn't bank them up. I know casinos would rather players not bank these since they have to consider it a liability for accounting purposes, so maybe that's the reason why?
So yes, better off just using these up.

Well now I know better. Which I guess makes me happier knowing I should only use my RCs for slot play if I'm staying at a CET property. If I'm not though the RCs go along way if I want to eat at their restaurants. Because then they are worth more.

She gave me the option of reversing it and charging me on my credit card for the entire meal/stay. There was no comping of the dinner. She used my RCs for it and then comped an additional $100 on the total stay. Which left me about $49 for the three days. I'd like to say, I'm not pissed off or ungreatful for ANYTHING this host did. She was very accommodating and did what she could to make my stay enjoyable. I'm only frustrated that the wording she used in my initial emails/texts prior to me coming there made it sound like she was taking care of the full dinner. It was her responsibility to convey RCs would be deducted no matter what. She didn't. So I'm frustrated at that. I'm not however unappreciative of anything else she did nor do I look down on them as whole. They're doing exactly what they are told to do and what is CET standard practice.
I just think this is a piss poor way of CET to treat their loyal players. That's all.

Yeah. I always knew about the $1 for every 175 tcs. But no such thing as $1 for every 75tcs. That's unheard of.
ok- yeah I knew Diamond got the 1:1.75- so $20 costs me 3500 RC's But I thought I missed something. and the 1:1.5 is for Aspiration level 2.
Occasionally they would run promos where they were 1 for 1 for everyone, but haven't seen that in years. I was waiting for one of those again so I could use a bunch.

Anyone would be disappointed that they were told one thing was going to happen and something else did. It's called a bait and switch. If I was told my rcs would be taken away before any further comps then I would have evaluated whether or not it would have been worth it to have that dinner at 19Kitchen as GR Steak in Vegas means more to me and my bf(which is what those rcs were for) than 19Kitchen did.
I'm sorry if posting my experience about being told one thing and having another done to me comes across as whiny.

hey all..its been awhile since I posted anything. anyways just want to say two things. SoCalRob That stinks that the host wasn't clear about covering you. Last year with Hunter at PH, he told me he will comp resort fees AND make sure I burn up any RCs before the comp or they will take it...out of his hands. Of course I used all for 3 buffets but then I played more and had $10 worth that I forgot and sure enough they ate them up and then comped the the resort fees. Wish your host was upfront to you.
and second, goldengreeke thats funny that you knew to convert RCs to FP...nothing gets by this guy haha! and he is right that program has been around awhile and I considered converting last year but I used for buffets instead. but seriously thinking about my bday offer at Cherokee of 8500 RCs and $125 FP and converting the RCs and just go for it.

Honestly. That's all I was saying. Just be upfront with me about what is REALLY gonna happen, and it's all good. I'm over it now. I've learned my lesson and like GG I'm gonna use up all my rcs next time before I even ask about comps. The funny thing is though. I have only asked for comps once. And that was limo transport in Vegas becsuse I knew they charged $71 each way. I'm not one to ask for comps on anything. Even with the food I didn't ask. The offer was extended to me and I thought it was the intention of being used without rcs. That's all. I got upset that it wasn't till after the fact that I was told otherwise.

I think CET hosts assume that everyone knows that RC's will be taken first. They even do that in NOLA now. In Vegas forever.
I agree that the host should say we will comp it after using your RC's but maybe they don't want to open a can of worms or open themselves up to further discussions. I remember it Tahoe years ago I was told they take RC's by the lady at VIP checkin.
But to the brighter side - you got your airfare paid for, a stocked limo to property, your suite comped, an extra freeplay given to you and your host was nice enough to give you an additional $100 comp in the most scenic place in the world. I don't know of any other player program that would do that and I know you do appreciate that.
I really don't like it when the host says we will comp it on the back end.

I am sorry that this happened to you. Thank you for sharing this because it's a lesson for all of us to remember that with CET you have to ask if what they are offering is going to be coming out of your reward credit balance.
The Cleveland casino when they were TR used to give out food comps that did not come off RCs. It was a separate piece of paper thing with various info on it (your name, restaurant name, $ value) that you'd take to the restaurant. If you went over the $ value you had to pay the difference. I used to get them quite often when I was heavy playing there and they never touched my RCs. I'm sure of this because I used to watch that balance like a hawk and keep track of my credits earned each day in my phone to make sure all the mulitipliers were correctly added later. I used to play specifically on multiplier days just to earn extra RCs to cash in for FP in Vegas.
I'm not sure if other locations can do these slips also because I've never asked. My CLE then-TR host was surprised that I didn't get or ask for one when I went to Baltimore and ate at the food court, which kind of gave me the impression they are done elsewhere. If anyone's looking for a food comp that does not come out of RCs these might be a possibility but again always ask if whatever they are giving you is coming out of your RCs.
In Vegas I charge everything to the room, but I also use up RCs on FP while I'm there so by the time my folio gets reviewed for comps I hardly have any RCs. What I have left gets taken but more than that gets discretionary comps. But no matter how much I've played vs. how much I've charged, whatever's in there ends up gone.
The whole RCs for cash thing that goldengreeke mentioned is totally new to me. I've turned them into cash but only from running FP through the machine once.

Luckily or perhaps not I never have many RC's built up during my recent trips to worry about it, so I've not been disappointed to see them go.
When I stayed at Borgata in July I was told at check out my charges would be taken care of, only to find my credit card was charged. I guess I assumed the host would comp the charges but I was wrong. On the other hand I used my comp dollars to buy an awesome handbag that I love.... Well worth more than the credit card charge.
Sorry Rob you lost your RC's but don't worry, just charge your GR meal to your room and hopefully your host will take off the extra charge in September :)

You're right sassycat. I am very appreciative of all that was given to me. I really really am. My post wasn't meant to sound ungrateful in the least bit. To be honest the ONLY things I asked the host before I left or even booked the vacation was about the transportation, the expired fp coupon, and about an expire food coupon. Did not ask for an upgrade(was very thankful to her when she sent an email saying she did it), didn't ask for the comped dinner. (she offered it up front. Another thing I was greatful for).
My experience prior to this and anything back end comp was with Hunter where I specifically asked about stuff and he said rcs first and then anything else I can see what I can take care of. This instance was different. She offered the comp of the dinner up front so, stupidly( i guess) I was under the assumption the RC rule wasnt going to apply here. As stated by Ida, I should have inquired in regards to the RC policy before I assumed that her statement meant she would take care of the entire bill without the RCs. Now I know for the future.

Also. I think another issue here is that I don't stock pile RCs for the sake of keeping them. I usually use them up right as I get them.. Unless I'm saving them for something special like GR Steak or really to have spending in Vegas. I was always using them at the Steakhouse or Food Court at HSR here in San Diego. The only reason I had the ones I had was for Sept.

Yes I purchased this with Borgata comp dollars. Although I did have to chip in because shopping with borgata comp dollars are only 50 cents to the dollar. Still I was very happy :)
Oh yeah I would be happy too. I have never been to Borgata so I have no slot dollars there. The places I have dollars at never have anything cute like that but I can always hope!

Thanks pkspins! I agree this bag was cuter than others I've seen at most casinos :)
Good luck on your casino shopping adventures.

Don't remember. Just that it was from an article detailing the downgrading the authority CET host would have going forward. I think I analogized it to replacing the hosts with the casino kiosks - because they no longer had the discretion to commit up front to comps etc.

In the end Rob, I never play for comps - if I get them great, if not I am not going to chase them. That way, I stay in control - I never anticipate getting anything besides the written offer I started out with - and I am at peace with that.

That's the same here. I don't ask for comps up front or at the end of my stay. This post was about a comp that was offered to me upfront. The wording was misleading and in the end what I assumed based off the promise of a host prior to me staying there ended up being different by the end of the stay. That is all.

I agree with your disappointment on your experience. If what happened to you, happened to me, the host would lose a lot of credibility - a real loss of respect, possibly end to the relationship. If I make a commitment, I live up to it. I just expect the reciprocal when dealing with others.

Who says you're not crazy? :onthego:
But seriously, I'm glad you posted this. It's sort of like a Public Service Announcement, and could be really helpful to anyone new to the CET program. We may not play for comps, but we sure do like to get the best possible value for our play, and that includes understanding as much as possible about any program you give much play to.
FWIW, I also understand saving up points for something special, as I do that as well. Based on what the host said, I would also have expected her to take care of that meal, but having heard of this happening before it would not have surprised me to have the points used. Like you said, Lesson Learned.

I use up as much as I can before asking for a comp. It is a sucky system if you ask me.

This is a very interesting post, thanks for starting it Rob.
Our host luck has been very different in Council Bluffs. They always comp the meals without touching our Reward Credits. I just checked and we have over 50k right now. I wonder if it's because it's a smaller market that the hosts have more leeway to do this? They've never touched our Reward Credits and we always have $250 - $300 worth of charges on the room that are comped.
I guess it'll be more like your experience when we go to Biloxi this fall. Bummer...it's been nice to bank our RC's.

If you remember, you should post your experience in Biloxi when you get back. It's always good to have a different perspective on the same situation.

Or....you can just come right out and ask the host up front if RCs will be used. Seems to me it's a pretty simple solution to the whole issue.

I know personally from now on. I'll just assume RCs are coming off and if they don't. It would be a nice and welcoming surprise.

It is like that at our home property in Bossier City - they give us food credit attached to room each time.
It was like that at Horseshoe Tunica and used to be like that at NOLA but they changed a couple of years ago.
Never been to Biloxi so not sure how they do it.

In Reno/Tahoe they provide me with a food voucher (varies between properties). I don't typically stay long enough to need more than one for the weekend. That way RCs are typically not in play, and I can save them for LV.

In Vegas CET have given me a food credit, so by charging to your room they can deduct this before using RC's

I haven't been to Biloxi since January so I'm not sure if things have changed but we have always just gone to the host office next to the Diamond lounge and they would give us a voucher to wherever we wanted to eat. They did not take our points. Also same experience in Tunica, I just went to host desk and they gave me vouchers for the buffet.

Rob, sorry this happened to you and thank you for the reminder to always clarify.
clemi, it the borgata host told you that they will take care of the charges, you should contact them to make sure they do. Things don't always go smoothly from the hosts to the front desk, but in my experience they will fix it. I've even got rooms comped that I've previously paid for months before. They just credit the amount to my credit card.
