After seeing so many folks having such good luck on reels, I am coming to the experts. Over the years I have spent very little time on reels. I have always been fascinated with the video slots because they keep me entertained. I have self diagnosed myself with ADD, so when I have played reels it seems like my mind wanders.

My upcoming trip in May I am wanting to focus some time on reels. I want input from the experts on ones that I should try playing. Keep in mind my bet sizes are .50 - 2.00, so no HL reels for me. On of the most recent ones I played I am not sure of the name. It just had x3 x4 x5 all over it. I do not know, this may be on many different reels. I know that there are single line and multi line reels. What are the advantages to each? Do the single line ones pay better if you hit? Do you find some more entertaining than others?

I appreciate your feedback! I want to do some research via YouTube, etc.

3x4x5x is a great reel to play lots of fun and hits can be real good.
double gold is also another favorite as well as wild bluebells or wild cherries.

i love the 3x4x5x diamonds that is $2 max bet and 40 lines, you get almost a win every spin and usually get majority of $ back if not more 50-100 can last a long time!

At CET properties in Vegas I like to play the dollar machines - two credit machines. At CP = I do well on the triple strike machine. They have a couple of them. Even if they are 3 credits - I usually play 2 credits.

I also like the double gold dollar and the triple ice machines. Also the triple flag seven (not sure the name but it was like the one that DarrellK got his handpay on last week)
Also the Triple Cash Machine and the triple diamond.

zeus I would suggest playing the $1 denomination (single payline) basic Double Diamond slot. I would start by playing 1 credit ($1) at a time to see how the machine is reacting. Top prizes are: ($800 for 1 credit played) & ($1,600 for 2 credits played). The top prize on this game hits on average about once every 8,000 spins (theoretically) which gives you the best odds out of all the 3 reel games. If you want to low-roll this is what I would suggest : )

I also like the 9-line/5 column double-diamond and 5-line Super Free games reels b/c they have free game bonuses. I've seen 25 cent denominations for both at Aria, so it'd be $1.25-$2.25/spin

Blase it could be a money management strategy to stretch bankroll or it could be the payouts are more frequent when you are not max betting. For me it is a combination of the two. The machine might get hot enough to warrant the max bet on the span of 10 spins but not justifiable for the long haul. zeus as a Reel HP winner this is my opinion & I hope this benefits you on your trip to Vegas. I like the Old School Triple Diamond, Double Gold, Pink Diamond. And, although I don't usually do very well on it, I see a lot of people do well on Double Diamond-Plus, as mentioned before, there is no penalty on that machine for not betting max credits. Not many of those around any longer.

Hi Zeus. $1 Blazing, and Sizzling 7s. BUT, you should be playing 3 coins, 2 coins pays only 1/2 what 3 coins pays. NEVER play one as there is NO pay for any 7s, just bars.

I'm pretty conservative when it comes to slots so I'll give you a contrarian view. I think traditional 3 reels are a little more volatile than normal video slots. Most video slots will give you back fractional wins on many spins. Many .50 cent spins on videos will give you back a nickel, dime, quarter, etc whereas most 3 reels will give you back at least your bet amount on a win. So You can expect bigger bankroll swings on reels than video slots, you may win big or you may go home early.

The only thing I would caution you on with the reels is to look at the pay table. when I first started playing slots I enjoyed playing sizzling 7s. I always play max on reels but my friends said you don't have to. Well, my first spin I did 1 coin, I was happy it hit Triple 7, thinking I would get $250 instead of $500 which was max. Well damn, this machine paid nothing for 7s unless you were playing 2 coins. Sucky lesson to learn but I never forgot about it lol.

There are a lot of machines you would get at least half but not all so just be careful and good luck :stung:

zeus I would also like to say that I have played all kinds of slots in the past 20+ years. I have 4 HP on Reels & 4 HP on Videos & I noticed a common denominator each time. For me I would get a mid-level hit followed by a bunch of smaller hits then boomshakalaka the HP. Wednesday night I received 3 mixed sevens for $80 then about 10 spins later the HP.
To quote my slotting mentor " NEVER LEAVE A HOT MACHINE - PLACE A VIRTUAL TENT AROUND IT "
Only leave that machine when you are convinced it is Cold.
When I am trying random reel machines I will give it 10 spins. If I get zero return on those 10 spins I move to a different machine cause it ain't happening there. Try 10 spins & assuming you win something then try 5 spins. If you win something then try 5 more spins. If you win something mid-level on the pay table keep playing as you could be about to get a HP.
All I know is that it happened that way for me all 4 times on reels. I hope this makes sense to you Don. Best of luck to you and Allen & I will be looking forward to your first HP pic .

I don't play a lot of reels for the same reasons as you, Zeus. They just get boring fast. But my biggest hand pay was on quarter Quick Hit reels at Paris. Max bet was $1.25 and it had a progressive of $5000 if you got all 9 Quick Hits. Well, I got all 9 Quick Hits but it was in a bonus so it paid $10,000. I am still amazed by that!

I have played many, many times since and of course never managed that feat again, but I have had some positive sessions. The possibility of hitting a bonus keeps it more interesting, and the potential is there for a handpay. Just be careful because some of them are set up for 9 lines instead of 5, and I know at Palazzo you can bet like 45 quarters - Um No Thank you!

I wouldn't invest a ton in these, but it might be worth a shot and they had a bank of them at Caesars last time I was there (which was awhile ago).

How much do you usually play on your penny machines at a time?

Thanks, sassycat! It really depends on how my day is going. If I am doing good I will run .80- 2.00 a spin. If I cannot hit a thing, then I am back to my .40-.50 spins. It is just my comfort level.

Remember in KC when I sat with you because I wanted time to get to finally meet you and I was playing that reel? I was clueless of what the slot was doing! But the time with you was so worth it. Yeah, that too. Although it can be just another way of reaching % payout. The older slots have about 30 configurations to do this, while newer ones can be 50-60 and god only knows how many there could be in videos:nightmare:

zeus I honestly find myself really bored with the reel machines. They don't do anything for me. I've played a few here and there. Occasionally I'll stick a hundred in a Bonus Times machine and bet $3 on one payline. It paid out once. two wins totalling $1500, but other than that, they're so dull to me. While I know statistically video slot machines are horrible with payback, I at least don't mind because I'm having fun. Whether it's a pick bonus, free games, or whatever it is, it's just a lot more entertaining and worth my money.

I almost exclusively play reels.

In your typical bet range, I'd look for the following types. My pictures may show higher denominations/bets but they're available and/or playable at lower denominations.

-----3 reel 5 line quarter slots, max bet would be $1.25. Triple Double Diamond is a good one. Better are the kind like Triple Red Hot 7s or 3x4x5x that pay something on the special symbols.
10051006

-----20 line 3 reels with free games. They're usually penny machines with a $2 max bet.
10071008

-----Pink Diamond Free Games in 25 line. I was just in Vegas and Bellagio and Cosmo have these. CP has the 5 credit 10 line type. While I will play the 10 line, 25 line is better as you get something on almost every spin. The 25 line you can find in pennies, max bet $2.50. Max bet only matters for the 3 triple pinks. On my picture I have the multi denom cranked up to nickels and am max betting - only time in all my play on these at various places that I got the 3 triples. One of the few machines that I go over $5 a spin.
1009

-----Sizzling 7s in 25 cent denomination. I max bet 75 cents on these but you can play just 50 cents and the 7s will still count. In my experience if you're going to get 7s you will get them fairly quickly, so these aren't typically machines I settle in to play for a while. I've gotten mixed sevens or 3 red sevens a lot on the 25 cent ones but I don't have any pictures. If I'm doing well at a place that has it I will throw $100 in a $5 denom one for 10 spins at 2 credits each and at least 50% of the times I've tried this I've gotten 3 red or 3 mixed for a quick payoff. Never gotten the three Sizzling Sevens on any denom.

-----Multi line 5 reels. The more lines the better. I like the one Dvandentop posted videos of but that one can run hot or cold. There's also Double Gold, Triple Strike, etc.. There are the types like the ones in his video that have bigger symbols. There are also ones that have 5 reels of smaller symbols....Triple Sevens, Triple Red Hot 7s. The smaller symbol ones come, in my experience, in 9 line or 20 line. 20 line is better. Max bet varies but it only matters for the top paying symbol set. My picture is at max bet and is one of my better hits on these but I've gotten lucrative combinations at bets per line below max bet.
1011

-----One line 3 reel slots, where the only up for playing max credits is for the highest payoff, and where there's some multiplier or special symbol that pays by itself if it lands on the line. So slots like Triple Diamond, Triple Stars (or Triple Double Stars), 3x4x5x Double Times Pay, Triple Red Hot 7s. These can also be good in quarters at max bet of 50 or 75 cents. In your bet range this would be $2 at one credit, $1 at one or two credits, and down to 50 cents or 25 cents. On the <$1 slots I would play max credits.

-----$1 Quick Hit, 3 reel one line, max bet $2. The kind where you get paid for the Quick Hits symbols whether they're on the line or not. They usually have a progressive for the 3 scattered Quick Hits that starts at $1000. The pic below is a win I got on one of those. The three Quick Hits in a line that is on my profile picture was on the non-progressive type that always pays $1000 for 3 scattered and does not have an accumulating progressive attached to it.

-----4 reel one line slots in quarter denomination at max bet, usually 75 cents. Triple Strike, Triple Hot Ice, etc.. They can run cold but when they are paying they are good for a lot of smaller hits with the occasional larger one that can get you a lot of play for your money if not a profit depending on when you walk away.

At a casino (not VLT) I usually go with 20 spins as that has worked well for me. In the case of a $5 reel I'll put $100 in and spin it through. I've seen bigger hits come through in those later spins after nothing for the first dozen more often than I haven't that it's been worth my gamble to do that. In the case of $1 reels with $3 max bet I'll put in a $20 to start and see where it takes me, but never more than 2 more and sometimes not even that. On other bet levels I don't put in more than one $20, unless it's a machine I know as in I have played that particular machine at that particular casino before.

With the multi line machines you can get nice individual hits, like in my picture and on dvandentops video, but for the most part you will get a lot of small and medium hits that will keep you hovering around the amount you originally put in until the machine eventually goes cold and quits paying anything. So it's always a judgement/gut call as to when to cash out with the original money or thereabouts. I love them because your money lasts and you can rack up tons of coin in.

Thank you so much for all of these details! It truly helps me understand reels so much better. Right now I am thinking possibly 10% reels and 90% video slots, but that could change once I get to Vegas. Again, thank you for the extensive details. I greatly appreciate it!

Well dang, my reply did not take. Thank you so much for the detailed description of the different reels, pkspins! This truly helps me out so much. Currently I am thinkjng about 10% reel play, but that could change once I get to Vegas. I really appreciate the time you put in to this!

You're welcome. Sorry some of the pictures didn't show up. I will try again:
3 reel 5 line slots
10121013

20 line 3 reel with free games - or the Hot Roll thing, where you get this dice rolling game that pops up:
10161015

Also when I talk about Sizzling Sevens I mean this game (not my video). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55jLt5ZdILI
There's another game with a similar name that I've seen but never played so I don't know how to recommend that one.

I should also mention that while I do like 20 line 5 reel machines, for money stretching/long play I like the ones that just pay for various lines on the reel. The ones like Keeping It Hot that have various progressives that you can win in addition to the line pays don't seem to give as many line hits. Also the 5 reels that have bonus or free games attached, like Pirates Bay, can run very hot or cold in terms of line pays and bonuses moreso than the type like in my pictures and dvandentop's video.

If you are in Vegas I would stop at MGM and play the Majestic Lions slots. I have had pretty good luck on these

Yep, that is the one I played at Cherokee and actually won a little bit on. Now that I think about it I should have upped my bets, but it was a low-rolling day that day. This gives me hope!

I will be hitting up MGM while there in May. It used to be our home property. I have heard of this slot and will add it to my list. Thanks!

Zeus, I did very well on Triple/double strike and triple/double gold on various machines in Vegas and Reno in the last 6 months. Good luck!
