Grand Cruise to Hawaii courtesy of Palazzo

The time for our cruise to Hawaii is almost here! We're flying to San Francisco tomorrow so we can spend a couple nights with our Tim before we board the Grand Princess on Friday for a 15 night cruise. Chrissy Dee and I (hehe) will try to do updates here, but we will be at sea with limited internet a lot of the time. We are very excited as this will be our first time on Princess and our first time to Hawaii! Hawaii is another one of Frank's big bucket list items, so I am thrilled I was able to pull this off with a comped cruise!!

Hilo, Hawaii The Big Island - Rent a car and visit Volcano National Park, a coffee farm, and Richardson State Park for snorkeling if we have time.



Honolulu - Private Tour booked with Jason Nau of OahuPrivateTours.com (http://oahuprivatetours.com/)
Doing a hybrid tour to include Pear Harbor (The Arizona), The North Shore & Byodo In Temple

Lahaina, Maui - Whale Watch aboard Maui Whale watching on the “Wiki Wahine (http://ultimatewhalewatch.com/wp/index.php/our-boat/)”, a 30 feet rigid hulled inflatable raft. Ultimatewhalewatch.com (http://ultimatewhalewatch.com/) and then meeting up with one of my favorite Jokers for lunch!


KAUAI - Frank is taking a Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tour (Kauai Eco Adventure). Rather than make us both miserable since I do not have the stones for it, I am skipping the chopper ride and going to the beach. Most likely I will end up at Kalapaki which is walkable from the ship, and if I feel ambitious I might go to the plantation. We'll have lunch on the beach when he gets back from his adventure.

ENSENADA - Probably just get off for a beer and a taco if we get off at all.

O, still sitting on the flight. They are doing a good job of communicating what they know. Its fascinating watching the activity. Folks are being deplaned for certain destinations where they can make connections thru other cities. There is a guy organization all luggage in the wagons by destination so they can find it all I guess. I can see

ChrissyDee, We spent a week on the island of Oahu. These are some things we found to be a must: Have "Hula Pie" at Dukes on Waikiki Beach. It is just down the road from where your ship will dock. We still dream about it and have tried to find ways to have some shipped to our home, hahaha, it was that good. The food is also awesome. The famous drink there was called the "Lava Flow" it is fruity and kind of creamy. I liked it very much.

The North Shore was our favorite part of the island, aside from Pearl Harbor. There is a wonderful town called Haleiwa. The beach is awesome. You will love it. Also, we drove from Waikiki to stay at Turtle Bay for a few days. We took the scenic route along the shoreline. Along that route are some great overlooks, including one that is famous for a scene in "From Here to Eternity."

At Pearl Harbor, if you are not going on a guided tour, be sure to pay for the "audio tour." You can do this at your own pace and it is very informative and helpful.

We also had the absolute best shaved ice at the base of Diamond Head.

Not sure if any of this will be helpful, but I thought I would share it, as these are the things we still talk about after 3 years.

We had shaved ice very day! lol. But our favorite of all was the one at Diamond Head. Never have been able to replicate it. So sad. We live smack dab in the middle of Texas, so no hope any time soon.

Aloha, and have a wonderful trip. I've only been to Hawaii once, a graduation trip with my best friend after college, and THAT was a trip to remember! (Our first night we found the pub where all the Qantas and New Zealand Air pilots hung out...oh, those accents....) Fortunately, I kept a journal of the trip, which I may have to pull out one of these days just to remind myself there was a time I stayed up all night dancing instead of nodding off at 9:30 p.m. while watching TV.

So we made it to Midway and spent a few hours dozing fitfully at the Fairfield. We were back at the airport at 6 to find that our flight to SFO is delayed until 10. Oh joy!

Were you on our honeymoon with us, lol! Hubby still talks about the Hula Pie (we had it in Maui though!), but we also did the scenic drive and stayed at Turtle Bay a few nights, and went to Haleiwa for dinner and shave ice! We stayed in a beach cottage and slept with the sliding door open and screen door closed so we could hear the ocean all night. It was fabulous!

Today was Hilo on the big Island of Hawaii. You can see snow on top of the mountains! We rented a car and took our time visiting Volcano national Park Including a little hike to and through a lava tube, Hilo coffee mill, The farmers market, a ukulele store and we swam at Richardson State Park. Black sand is hot as fuck but the water was cool and refreshing. We had a great day!

We had lunch at Ted's bakery, and yes they had some baked goods, but they did a steady luncheon business of Hawaiian Staples. I had chicken and mahi-mahi which came with kimchi, macaroni salad, 16 pounds of rice, and banana cream pie. It was yummy. I didn't get a picture of FRAnk's lunch, but he had the recommended special which I forgot the name of (Update franks lunch was Mocoloco). but was a Fried egg on a large hamburger patty on 17 pounds of rice smothered in gravy. These Hawaiians don't eat lightly!

This was just the morning! We saw a ton of amazing and beautiful sites. I even spotted a whale breaching on Waimea Bay

So, growing up having snow cones as a kid, I figured the shaved ice thing had to be much ado about nothing. Wrong. Shaved ice maybe the best thing ever invented!

We had the opportunity to get to Pearl Harbor and we're both truly moved by this amazing memorial.

Yesterday was Maui which is now my favorite place on earth. Lahaina is the neatest little shoreside town and the whale watching was phenomenal. No whale

From the photo but we were on a 30' zodiac. Whales are about 45' [emoji14]we saw many, many whales. Mamas with their babies, sometimes with a male escort. It was amazing to observe their behaviors and had the pleasure of an almost full breach just off our side of the boat. It was a dazzling display!

She was beautifully coiffed and dressed and I was a soaked drowned rat! She and John treated us to a delightful lunch at the Lahaina Fish Company. Fabulous fish tacos & yummy local beer.

We are in Ensenada for a few hours but too lazy to disembark. It looks nicer than expected. We have one more day at sea and then a grueling travel day but I will try to gather my thoughts and post on Sunday or Monday. It has been truly spectacular!'

We made it home about 2:30 this morning to chilly temperatures and snow still on the ground. Thank goodness we set the alarm or we would have been late to pick up the pups at noon! While we were waiting for our flight yesterday at SFO, I ordered groceries online and we picked them up this afternoon so there is food in the house. The 2 of us are exhausted and spent most of the day dozing off and on. I'll update tomorrow!
