ACL Surgery #2 for my soon to be Bionic Dog Carlos.

Carlos jumped off the couch last Thursday after and immediatedly started limping. I was hoping it was a result of the Rabies shot he had that day, but after 4 days he is still not using the right hind leg, and is struggling. The Vet sedated him and did an x-ray and the right ACL is torn. He also appears to have some facial paralysis on his left side of his face, which may be the result of a Thryoid issue. Blood work should provide some insight. Carlos has a lot of life left in him, and has been by my side supporting me through a crappy few month. Surgery is scheduled for the 21st. I may have a bionic dog soon - but I would give up just about anything to give him a healthy and happy life. Crazy I know, but I love this darn dog!

Poor Carlos! So sorry that he has to go through surgery again. We are playing the waiting game with Dimitri. His X-ray showed an ACL tear. The vet thought it may heal with "bed rest". We'll take him back at the beginning of April and make the surgery decision. It's been almost impossible to keep a 90 pound, 3 year old German shepherd quiet and sedate. He want so bad to go chase the neighbor dog along the back fence. Not letting him play is breaking my heart. I sure hope Carlos recovers quickly from the surgery and continues his happy wonderful life!

Thank you everyone. Yes we have done this recently so feel a little better about the process since I know what to expect. Less fear about the unknown. A little concerned about the thyroid issue, but hopefully a daily med for him will help with the effects of that. When I rescued him I said I would be his fur ever home, and so I will do what it takes to keep him healthy and happy. Positive vibes from you Jokers work!

I am heartbroken to tell you that I had to let Carlos go to heaven yesterday. He was healing from his ACL surgery and stepped up a small step and his left leg gave out. I rushed him to the vet and after sedated X-rays they determined his leg had broken near his left hind quarters. We just had X-rays in March and those looked fine. The vet could not do anything and said our only option was and orthopedic specialist, but they said if they could do anything it would be a painful and difficult recovery and possibly a wheel cart. I couldn't put Carlos through that, he had already had 2 surgeries in 8 months. It was too much for the little guy to take. My heart is broken. CeCe, my heart aches for you. I wish I had the words to say to help take the pain away, but there is nothing that I can say more than I am so very, very sorry. I know it hurts so bad right now, but it will get easier over time. Believe me.

When we had to say goodbye to Caleb it was a sadness I have never experienced. I pretty much stopped living. But me and Allen helped each other by remembering all the things he did throughout his life. The good and the bad. We cried and laughed. It was great therapy for us.

Sweetie, just always remember that you did everything that you possibly could for your fur baby. He was such a lucky little boy to have you as his mommy. I wish I could give you a huge hug right now to let you know it will be okay.

Thank you everyone - it has been a rough few days. I received a call today from my normal vets assistant. Her husband works at the surgery center and worked on Carlos for his two surgeries. He was not working on Saturday, but reviewed Carlos's x-rays and met with Dr. Kim who was on call Saturday when I brough him in. They wanted me to know that I made the best decision for Carlos after reviewing all the information. That lifted my heart a little. In my selfish mind, I should have done anything to keep him going for me, but it wouldn't have been the best thing for him.

I know he will forever have a place in my heart.. and this 53 year old broad is going to get a tatoo of his paw print they made me, so I will always have him with me.

So I found a new resuce who needs a home. My heart needs healing and his heart needs to be loved. I am going to meet Jake this weekend, and see if we are a good match.
