I guess for some this could be serious betting, but I'm just curious (not looking for any tips-haha!). I love horses (Bob and I have had them most of our lives), but actually don't like racing (constant worrier about injuries). I do watch occasional races and appreciate the beauty of these amazing animals, but anyway ... if you bet on races, do you bet on numbers or names? Or do you really study the stats and bet based on those? Do you have favorites that you follow? That being said, here is the lineup for Saturday's Derby. Who would be your pick?

Kentucky Derby odds (as of 5/1), post positions
1 Firenze Fire 50-1
2 Free Drop Billy 30-1
3 Promises Fulfilled 30-1
4 Flameaway 30-1
5 Audible 8-1
6 Good Magic 12-1
7 Justify 3-1
8 Lone Sailor 50-1
9 Hofburg 20-1
10 My Boy Jack 30-1
11 Bolt d'Oro 8-1
12 Enticed 30-1
13 Bravazo 50-1
14 Mendelssohn 5-1
15 Instilled Regard 50-1
16 Magnum Moon 6-1
17 Solomini 30-1
18 Vino Rosso 12-1
19 Noble Indy 30-1
20 Combatant 50-1

With all those longshots, put $5 on every horse.

I usually bet on the name and it’s usually a one name horse. I do look at the jockey and trainer but that’s about it. I do tend to favor California horses

Like some here, I try to handicap, then I only go for exacta's and trifacta's (or bigger) for a total of $50 in bets. Just spread it out in hopes of winning.

Last decent hit was in 1994, on a $10 boxed trifacta. Otherwise, no wins big enough to cover the $50.

I know nothing about horse racing, but have always selected by a name that intrigues me. From this list I would have to pick Lone Sailor. [emoji8]

My Boy Jack has a familiar ring to it, not sure why.

Pat, you know my husband and I like the race horses. DH usually just bets his favorite numbers, may throw those numbers in with a favorite here and there. We usually bet exacta boxes.

I like to see the horses then make my decision. Picking our Oaks horses tonight.

I know nothing about this Derby. I have been preoccupied with other things. So I am going to give you my gut picks. It's an exacta. Justify and Audible. I don't know the Jockeys or anything. Wish I could make a bet. If only there was a horse named hoity toity.

I won’t pick my Derby horses until tomorrow. For the Oaks tomorrow, I am playing a $2.00 exacta box (1-4-10-11), if any of these four finish first and second I’ll win my exacta bet. 10 is the favorite so I would rather that horse finish behind one of the other 3. This bet will cost $24, I may bet a $4 exacta box for $48.

HHH about the hoity toity!

I may steal that idea and go do it!

I don't actually bet on these, but I do like to root for one, or two. I do usually go by name and then maybe odds and number. Nothing really stands out for me, but I do keep coming back to Free Drop Billy. If I WAS to bet on one, though, I would have to go with Trey's boy Jack. I think Pat is on to something, though, with Hoity Toity. I would just love to hear the announcer say that one.

Thankfully no horses got hurt in that slop! That was worrisome. Love how clean Mike Smith and Justify was at the finish. Always exciting to watch. Hard to pick top three or four but does happen!
