If you fly SWA, here's your thread.

Apparently, SWA is going to give another go to the interior layout.

For you cross country travelers

If you click on the flight number on SWA website, it will tell you which series of 737 that flight uses and capacity. From Columbus to Vegas, SWA uses 737-700 and 737-800. The 700 series holds 143 and the 800 holds 175. The 800 is longer and has much more room between seats. It's so much better that we align our travel dates so we can be on the 800, particularly out as it's a 1 hr longer flight.

Ha, ha! I wouldn't be surprised. We had an employee that used to be a "stewardess" for Braniff, and she still had her "Pucci" designer outfit and her go go boots. Her daughter wore it for a Halloween costume one year:)

So far most awards look pretty close to what they were, but I imagine they will slowly inch upward, especially when people stop paying such close attention.

I am already shopping for a new airline for my long distance travels, but SWA is still pretty decent for flights 3 hours or less.

Have made an executive moemoe decision and decided to buy only Business Select seating on Southwest any more - don't care what the cost difference is, fully refundable and includes earlybird seating - this decision stems from the fact that we're into 5-week countdown mode before $700+ credits expire from an unavoidable cancelled 2014 trip... we're booked but until I'm in the air can only see my $$$ circling the drain right now, yes call the whambulance LOL...

Yikes moemoe, that wouldn't work for me. Can't touch business select for anywhere I go for under $500. For that, I can usually find a first class fare on someone.

I did find a non-stop LAS to MHT (that run has been cancelled with very rare exceptions) for a reasonable price after the Tahoe M&G, so I have reserved it hoping I can make it work out. $260 for wanna get away. $597 for Business Select - can't justify that price tag.

Just when I think I am done with SWA.....

I was browsing a flight schedule for BWI-LAS on Alaska Airlines. It was BWI-Seattle. Seattle to Bellingham,WA. 10 Hour Layover. Bellingham-Vegas. It was almost a 23 hour travel day and close to $800. I thought it might be fun if a little cheaper..hehe (Or not!)

Couple of Southwest Tips:

(1) Hidden City Ticketing is the practice of buying a ticket to a destination to which you do not intend to travel with the intention of disembarking at a connection. A few years ago, you could save a lot of money by doing this, but Airlines are getting smarter and the benefits while still there are now a lot less. To illustrate, a one way ticket to Vegas on Southwest costs me $240 but a one way ticket to Reno is $210. Guess where the flight to Reno connects through?

(2) Vegas is a fairly substantial hub for Southwest in the west. There are at least 15 destinations that will connect through Vegas with the first leg being a nonstop from my home airport -- examples: Reno, L.A., Sacramento. You can narrow these down by just looking at the Southwest Map "Where We Fly" and seeing the nonstops originating in Vegas.

(3) So, instead of flying to Vegas, check the price to fly to "Reno" or another nearby destination served from Vegas and just don't get on that connection.

(4) Be careful: unless by coincidence you do not have to change a plane, by going through the reboarding process (you know, the "ding" part), Southwest will know that you did not complete the second leg of your flight and (i) you will in all probably not get Southwest points; and (ii) it may cancel the return portion of you flight (so only buy one way tickets, which are the same price). Also, you cannot do a "backwards hidden city", that is just use the connection portion of your ticket -- at least so I heard, I've never actually tried this. Finally, while I don't think Southwest's travel terms expressly prohibit this practice, other airlines do and it is kind of a legal gray area to be kind. You're not going to get arrested, of course, you may be subject to whatever penalties are specified in the terms of travel for having done it (though I've never heard of anyone ever getting nailed for this).

Southwest Airlines: 'Sale crashed our website' (http://www.foxnews.com/travel/2015/06/04/southwest-airlines-sale-crashed-our-website/)

Southwest Airlines Co.'s website is slowing to a crawl, and the airline blames heavy response to a sale on fall travel.

Visitors to southwest.com late Wednesday afternoon saw a "system alert" warning that "you may experience difficulty" on the site. When one visitor tried to book a trip, there was no immediate response from the site, and eventually the screen flipped to a "Gateway Timeout."

Southwest spokeswoman Brandy King said the airline added capacity to the website in anticipation of high demand from a 3-day sale that began Tuesday, but the response was bigger than expected. King said workers were trying to restore the website's functions. She said customers could try later or call the airline for help.

The sale included prices as low as $49 one-way on short trips to $149 each way for long trips, and covered travel between Aug. 25 and Dec. 16. Like most airline sales, there were many conditions including blackout dates around Labor Day and Thanksgiving, and Southwest didn't say how many seats would be available at the sale prices.

American Airlines and United Airlines confirmed that they matched Southwest's fares on routes where they compete.

Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com, said Delta, Alaska, Virgin America and Frontier also had fares matching Southwest on overlapping routes, although he added that it was "hard to tell who matched and who initiated" because there were so many new fares filed on Tuesday. The first week in June is a perennial time for fall-travel sales, he said.

At lunch it wasn't even doing anything. Will check out the app, thanks Trey!

The good news is that doesn't appear to be a hard and fast rule - they change the points required for each flight dynamically. I have actually found several 70pt ratio nonstops to Vegas, though of course that limits flexibility. I try to use casino credits to pay for Business Select fares in 'cash' and use my SW points for bargain points routes.

I'm new to Southwest credits but I re-booked my out going flight today to Houston for the Coushatta M&G for a $31 credit. Question......let's say I do this multiple times before the flight in Nov, will all the credits be lumped together as a total credit to be used on a future flight (I know it expires 1 yr from date of original booking) or are they considered individual credits with a limit to how many you can use for that future flight? I hope that makes sense, lol!

So Ken, even if it only goes down like $5 (which is all my return flight dropped) I should go for it because it's the total savings attached to that reservation to be used for future flight, not a limit of "X" amount of credit changes?

Yes, anytime it goes down, change the flight (to the same one). All the credit is attached to your confirmation number in which you can apply later. As far as I'm aware, there are no limits to the number of times you can rebook.

Good idea trey, thanks.

I see that my return flight has now gone back up before I could save that $5, lol. There's a different flight that leaves Hobby a half hour later but only has a 35 minute layover in Dallas Love vs. my 1 hr. layover. Anything under 45 minutes for a layover scares me so I think I'll just keep watching my original return flight especially seeing that if I would fail to make that connection in Dallas, I'd be sleeping in the airport since it's the last flight to Pittsburgh that night. Not worth the $41 savings at all!

SWA Chase card is the only one I've used for the past 6 yrs or so. Average about $2K in charges every month. Get about 1-2 RT trips from Columbus to Vegas every year. However, I've noticed the number of points for a freebie keeps increasing.

So should I go with the $100 statement credit w/ 10,000 bonus after $500 or just the standard 25,000 bonus after $1k (this one I dont know how long it'll take to be able to book my flight, unless they link my cc number to my RR account...I just don't feel like calling and asking!)

Have you looked at how many points it is for the flights you want to take? For me, 10,000 points doesn't do much since the flights I take are long. Generally a round trip is between 20,000 & 25,000 for me and I just used 32,000 points for a round trip from San Antonio to San Francisco for my son. It might be worth it for you since you are looking for shorter flights?

If I recall correctly, you don't get the bonus points until the statement comes out after you have made the required spend. So, probably 4-6 weeks from sign up? I could be off on that though.

Rob, you need to wait til the 50,000 pt offer comes back. And then get the personal and the business card. Charge $10k and you'll have 110,000 pts which qualifies you for the companion pass. Then your companion will fly for free for the remainder of that year and the next year! (So you can get up to two years of free travel). And you can change your companion several times too.

Here is a good write up about it.

Personally I wouldn't sign up for the SWA CC until the 50,000 pt offer is available.

Dear God....I wouldn't spend 10k in a year...that would not work for me at all....The small 10k offer or even 25k offers work for me because my short travel is only about 9k per round trip...I've already got a bunch of miles as it is. The problem with waiting is I have no clue when it would be that it is going to pop up. Not only that, I wanna get my flight booked before the prices increase. Seems I keep just missing the good prices every time I hold off on booking.

A flight to vegas from san is like 8,800. So ten is low, 25k is better...but...I don't know if I sign up with 25k, how long I'll have to wait for the card to be able to book the flight. Where as the 10k bonus offer is included in booking the flight. Plus the $100 off. I'm assuming with the 25k offer I won't have access to the card/account number in order to charge it to the SWA account right away to book the flight...and thus I'll have to wait for the physical card to book said flight.

Blase is right and the 10,000 points will not be hard to earn. I don't have the SW card yet, but plan on doing it this way to get the companion pass. I currently start all my on-line shopping through the Southwest Rewards and rack up the points that way, that usually gives me enough points each year for RT tickets to Vegas at least once, coming from the east coast, it usually takes about 30,000+/- currently for a flight. Not a bad way to earn the points without getting the card.

Rob,
You can call them after you are approved and ask them to expedite (overnight) the card to you because you have upcoming purchases you intend to charge. I've done this a few times in the past and they have always been willing to do that for me.

In my opinion, if there's just you and maybe one other person...$2k is a lot to spend in three months. That's one reason I didn't wait. I check rental car prices using SWA everyday. Sometimes I run into prices that make no sense. I'm looking at Alamo premium car for 12/13-12/20.

I check prices for picking up at 9am, 9:30am, and 10am. Return time is always 7:30am on 12/20.

Prices:
-9am $243
-9:30am $204

It will check you in automatically. You can go online and still do the check in process, it will let you know what boarding position you have. Then at the airport go to a kiosk and print out your boarding pass. Easy stuff! Enjoy your ghetto first class experience, hope you get a good position! :)

No matter when you check in you still get the same boarding position with early bird. A1-15 is usually reserved for business class so best you can get would be A16.

As close as possible to the front for speedier departure once you get to Vegas! As Trey said, A1-A15 are for Business fare/A List and a lot of the flights I've been on there are hardly 3-5 people in that group. A35 will get you a nice window seat close to the front. You know how they say the people in first class get to glare up at the poor people in coach as they board behind their newspaper? Yeah on Southwest that's what it feels like to board in the A group..Hehe

I'd like to point out that while this is technically true. You can BUY your way into the A1-15 boarding group without being business class. When you get to the airport. Say you have a B or C boarding group and you do in fact care about where you sit. You can pay them $40 bucks usually and they move your boarding number from wherever you are to A1-15. So you're paying less that a business fare and still getting that FIRST on experience. I do this from time to time if I don't purchase early bird or get anything from A30 to C whatever. I know it is unnecessary for most but again, I am SUPER anal about where I sit. Hell, one time I was A 20 something and still paid to get bumped up. I usually end up A1-5. Twice I've been A1.

If you go to SWA fares calendar view, there's a button that will toggle from $ to points.

7000 pts currently offsets about a $129 in airfare. If you're close, you can always buy points.

We purchased tickets for a December trip and I noticed that the price has went down.

What do I do? Do I have to cancel the other flight first and then rebook the new flight? I'm afraid if I cancel - the price may go up before I can rebook.

Any step by step instructions would be a great help. I'm not used to flying Southwest. Thanks!

Yep!! I got an offer for $250 travel reimbursement and $125 spa credit plus $100 food credit and $210 slot play. The friends that we went on the cruises with live in Orange County and frequent Harrah's so we are flying into Orange County and they are picking us up and taking us to the casino.

Wow nice credit!

They sent me an email yesterday about completing two trips between Thanksgiving & Christmas and get 10,000 bonus points. I'll have one to Vegas, but no others. I could take a mileage run trip from BWI to Pittsburgh for around $180, but 10,000 points is like around $200? Not worth going out of the way, unless I'm looking to kill some time flying for a day I guess!

That's not a bad idea, but not enough time to accomplish such a task! Going out Wednesday and back Saturday. Plans Wednesday & Thursday and chilling on Friday and moving to the Cromwell. I will keep my eye out though for cheap flights from BWI or surrounding cities as they don't specify a required flight range. Gimme like $49 one way and I'm in!

I haven't checked other airlines to cities.

I'm so far in the tank with SWA. Currently, we are sitting on $100 worth of credits from SWA. There is little chance of getting Linda to travel to another city during winter to take a flight.

You just change and rebook. It works exactly the same with points as with $$. Don't cancel, especially if have booked early bird as you will lose that.

The difference in points will just go back into your account. If you paid with $$, then you need to keep track of the confirmation number to use the difference on another flight within a year of the initial booking.

Yup, just change flight and pick the exact same flight. You can see the price/point difference before you are committed to the change.

Chris is right, you have to keep tracK of the confirmation number that the reservation is on to use your $$ credit in the future.

The only catch is early birds are issued in chronological order, so when you rebook you move to the end of the early bird line. So instead of getting A22 you might get A37

A friend on YouTube sent me a referral link and she will get 10k bonus, so that's cool. Immediately they gave me a $14,500 credit line, thank goodness I was afraid I wouldn't have enough! HHH I may put my Amex on the bank burner and start getting some points with this one as I fly Southwest a lot.

I have been doing this for years. Charge everything and make sure you pay it off at the end of the month. If you shop online check rapid rewards shopping first, alot of times they will offer 2 - 10 points per dollar instead of 1 point per dollar. Join e-rewards and take surveys. You can exchange points for rapid rewards credits. For every 25 credits you get 600 rapid rewards credits which is a great deal. Also when you book a flight dont get the EB seating as you can change your flight to the same one if the price goes down and they will refund the credits to your account. Get the EB before you leave. I love Southwest!

That's almost exactly what my friend who referred me said as well, I will keep that mind! :)

I'll probably get my bonus and finish off my Amex points to get my $100 credit where I'm almost halfway there. Then I will switch over to this one and churn some points for next year's Vegas trip! Wheee I love free stuff..haha (Less the annual fee of course!)

You get a 3000 point bonus on your anniversary date so its really no loss.

SW is having a sale, how do I rebook and get credit? Do I purchase the ticket and charge it again? At that point I would have paid for the ticket 2x. Thanks

It's been a long long time since I did it but I think you can call them and ask how to do it. They won't do it for you but will tell you what to do. I remember they did for me way back when I could fly.

Riversong,
Sign into your account and there should be an option to "change flight". You'll probably need the confirmation number for your original booking (I do it so automatically, I can't remember the exact steps now), but after you choose change flight, you'll get the option of changing one or both legs. It'll give you the new prices for the available flights and when you choose the lower price, you should see a credit at the end.

Forget my last response RS. You're not cancelling, just changing. This is from the SW website. The EB check-in is associated with your confirmation number so since that isn't changing when you change flights, the EB will still be good for the new schedule. I never use EB but after my trip to Vegas last month, will probably start.

Early Bird is a MUST if you want to secure overhead baggage space on a busy flight (normally Fridays and Sundays) and you just wait until you get to the airport to check-in (e.g. the dreaded GROUP "C"). Otherwise, you can usually get at least a "B" group or even an "A" group if you check-in exactly 24 hours before departure. I have had the EB "vanish" a few times when I change a reservation which is solved with a quick call to customer service.

Late by 4 minutes for the trip out and got C11 and late by about 10 minutes for the return and got C23! [emoji37]

I pretty much do EB always, saves me the trouble of remembering that 24 hour checkin time.

So many people now do the EB that I got a lousy B15 on my EB to Vegas last time and I bought the tickets months earlier. So there is no guarantee, but I would hate to think what I would get if I did not have EB.

If you buy early bird and rebook, you get booted back to the end of the early bird line. Early bird is assigned in chronological order so the earlier you buy early bird, the better your seat number. If you buy early bird 5 months in advance, you might get A22, but if you rebook that same flight two weeks before the travel date, you might get B18.

My advice when buying SWA fights is to always book individual legs and not a roundtrip. The price is the same and it's easier to rebook. Also we now book separate flights for each of us, just gives you most flexibility if something comes up. Only drawback is you have 4 confirmation numbers to keep track of for two people.

If you log into your SWA account and click on the flight, you'll see 'change'. Click on that, select that flight and then you'll rebook the exact same flight. You'll see what the credit amount will be and you can abort the whole process anytime until you hit the 'are you sure you want to make these changes?' prompt.

BTW- your credit is tied to your confirmation number, you might need it when you want to use the credit. Keep track of it.

I know it seems like a waste, but I stopped paying for EB and started just upgrading my boarding position at the gate for A1-15. It's $30 which is a lot, but for someone like me who is mildly picky about where he sits on the plane and have anxiety with flying, its well worth the price, especially since all EB ever got me was maybe FAR into the A or early B group.

I completely agree with this. I have also been led to believe that the price you paid for your ticket is somehow factored in, although I'm not sure how they would do that. Sometimes I don't bother rebooking when the price changes by just a few dollars.

Nowadays I usually draw the rebook line around $20. Any less than that is not worth losing my EB spot and having to keep track of the credit.

From the Southwest site:
Customers who have purchased Anytime Fares will receive priority over Customer’s who purchase Early Bird with other fare types. Boarding positions are assigned based on the time stamp of the EarlyBird Check-In purchase relative to passengers within the same fare class.

The tricky part is "relative to passengers within the same fare class". Its the "fare class" component that is tricky here when trying to factor in who bought what, and when. So just because you did an EB two months ago, someone who did an EB one month may still get a better boarding assignment then you.

Its only a $38 difference, I mostly likely won't rebook...but I did activate an account today! Thanks for all the responses.

To all you SW experts:

Currently SW offers schedules through 31 January 2019. When do you think they will load the next batch of schedules?
