This is my favorite thing to do:
If it's a port on an island or country you wish to re-visit at a later date, pick up info, maps, etc from the local tourism office.
Visit a hotel that looked fabulous online, have lunch, and ask the front desk to see a room. Most will be accommodating and pleased to show you their property.
