View Full Version : Should I be flattered or concerned?

I started going to the Borgata in spring 2011 if I remember correctly. From my birthday in 2012 onward, I've gotten a Borgata birthday cake. This year I didn't get one and was honestly, a little bummed.

Today it arrived with the attached card. Flattering but do I really want to be one of their "top customers?" :loco:

That's cool they do it, better than a card from the dentist lol

Only thing I get is drink coupons from Southwest Air that I never get to use.

You should be flattered. I've gotten a single email from a host ("call me and I'll try to get you a room") and basically nothing else even though I lost thousands there between Christmas and New Year's.

On the other hand, at Resorts in AC, where I have been known to low roll, I happened to be there not long ago for a gift givaway and received a lovely box of Faberware (read: cheap, Asian-made utensils) kitchen tools. I had a choice between green and black and the multiple pieces inside included a number of prized rarities such as a plastic soup ladle and carrot peeler. I was there on a day when the buses of seniors were too, so actually quite a number of people there partook and could be seen around the casino for the remainder of the day carrying the box from slot to slot. I later observed someone trading Soupman (yes, there's one of those franchises in Resorts) for one of the boxes and a couple people waiting at the bus depot that were using the pasta stirrer as a back scratcher. Yuck, although I admit to having tried it myself later and those pasta stirrers are actually quite efficient and satisfying for hard to reach places.

I was being sort of tongue-in-cheek -- it is nice to receive it. Will probably bring it into work tomorrow so will show you an innards photo then, Derek!

But not going to lie, the thought flashes through my mind of "do I really want to be a customer that gets noticed enough to get a cake?" I've had a much better 14 months at Borgata but I question my gambling from time to time. I think it's mainly b/c my family doesn't approve and most of my friends don't so I'm really an outlier. But ... no debt, paid off my 30 year law school student loans in 7, have lots in my 401k and building up my savings. Just the Jewish guilt gets to me sometimes.

As I head down to AC for a three night trip next week :)

You and I need to get together sometime and talk about BigLaw decompression techniques. Like you, I have savings, a family I spend time with (though not as much as they want), a 401(k) , etc. I love, absolutely love, to chase a jackpot though and it's a great diversion from some of the awful stuff we all have to put up with and, at least in my view, a much healthier alternative to drinking (by far, the most common outlet I observe), abuse of prescription drugs (close #2), and just getting burned out. The folks who tend not to approve don't know the "joy" of dealing with accounting for your life in six minute increments, opposing counsel who fight to the death on the smallest and most insignificant of issues, petty law office politics and self-important "business generators" who haven't done a real day of hard work, much less any legal work, in years. Sorry, been one of those days.

I'm sorry you've had a shitty day Noleman but your post is spot-on. Thanks for explaining it that way :) We had our summer associate kickoff event tonight and one of the partners from the firm we joined asked if I was a summer ... haha. I guess I must look very young b/c I was a summer 8 years ago.

DK528, happy late birthday and congratulations on the cake. I think we all question the gambling from time to time, but it sounds like you have everything well in hand. When will you be at the B next week?

Dina, enjoy your long weekend at the B next week. I'm spending next Fri. night at the GN with my daughter.

The casino is definitely my outlet for stress. Like noleman said, we can definitely have worse ways to relieve stress. My friends don't understand my enjoyment of the casinos either, which is why we all have each other.

I too am drained from the ever changing secured creditors laws. I wish I could hit the big one and retire!

No, won't be there then. I don't get weekend rooms, but I may go down there this Sunday. Have not been to a casino since March.

Considering your situation, I'd say flattered that you have a host that sends you one! I heard at one time it's not automatic, your host has to have it sent. I'm back on the radar to get giveaway offers again and I asked myself the same thing. I'm quite happy that I can't get weekend rooms or I would be there all the time, which would not be a good thing on my savings and 401k contributions..hehe Enjoy your cake Dina! :nevreness:

Yeah, the weekend rooms are very helpful. I stopped getting them after my three straight weekends last summer when I didn't gamble as much as I usually do but got them back :)

BorgataBabe, exactly -- it's one of my ways to relieve stress. Which is also why I kind of like going by myself and not having to talk to anyone if I don't have to.

Shoot! I brought the cake with me on my 2 mile walk to work and totally forgot to cut into it as I had a crazy busy afternoon. I'm eating dinner at my desk -- I'm going to abstain from cutting it open so I can have some for dessert and let my coworkers have the rest tomorrow. I've lost 11 lbs since 4/16 and I don't want to mess up by eating half the cake!

Exactly -- the time to yourself, no deadlines, no other distractions, the anonymity and the focus on something other than solving someone else's problems. It's meditating for type-A's.

I don't like casinos calling anyone a customer. Customers are retail shoppers or barbershop/salon goers. Honestly when it comes to hospitality/restaurants I'd rather someone call me a guest. That's awesome though. That cake looks absolutely delicious

Innards photos! Also including a photo with a bouquet I got from a dear friend. It has peonies and hydrangeas and smells amazing. The corridor outside my office smells amazing too!

Gotta say it's really delicious.
