Hi--so pleased your plans are working out--really enjoy you and Moyra's postings. Here in San Diego, CA you only have to get a smog certificate every two years. It is stated on your vehicle registration (which has to be renewed every year) when it is due. There are smog certificate only stations you can go to and they cost around $50. There are no other maintenance checks, etc.--it is up to you. The Vehicle Registration Fee is based on the value of your car. The newer the car the higher the fee. The fee on our 17-year old Ford Conversion Van was $182 this year. In California you must carry proof of insurance in your car at all times. It is against the CA law to drive without insurance.
